When the fighting starts, the speed picks up considerably.Īs for the speed and mobility of the suits themselves, when you’re dealing with giant robots, you’re not really dealing with accurate physics to begin with. Much like a fighter jet in real life, things only really slow down between the action. Any additional time would be geared toward stuff like startup/shutdown, launch and recovery from a ship, advanced radar operation, navigation, troubleshooting and fixing malfunctions/damage, etc. The added complexity just gives you more flexibility in gameplay scenarios. Simply moving a mobile suit around wouldn’t require pressing 20 buttons at once or anything. Yet, dogfighting is still pretty quick and intense. Just about everything is modeled and simulated down to the last detail for the aircraft in DCS. Using DCS as an example, complexity shouldn’t imply slow paced gameplay. Off the top of my head, I know the first one for the RGM-79 features an entire chapter dedicated to the cockpit, controls, and operation of the mobile suit. In fact, a series of technical manuals were released on various UC mobile suits a few years ago that cover some of this. As time went on, the cockpits became a bit simpler, but operating them as depicted in the anime is still more complicated than the current games imply (unless you’re a Newtype, of course). Lots of possibilities including character switching sides for valuable reasons (Side 2 habitant, Zeta just being a time where lots of people had their beliefs make them change army, being disgruntled by Londo Bell way or the Federation bureaucracy, not believing in the Zabi/Haman dictatorial way, being an ancient ally of Zeon Daikun, being a Char/Amuro fan or something etc.)Īs much as I would want it to cover Unicorn there's not much room for anything extra in that story, even CCA is stretching it a little bit (haven't read Beltorchika's Children though, maybe it goes a bit deeper and made a more complex story and political context than the movie did?), but OYW Zeta and ZZ were all full conflicts with lots of room for missions we weren't told about.Ĭlick to shrink.Yes, the cockpits are fairly intricate-particularly in early UC models. On that topic I found Char's Deleted Affair to be a great achievement on that front, it covered what happened to him between the OYW and Zeta rather well, introduced and developed a fair amount of protagonists/antagonists from Zeta and even that little bit of mecha fanservice that is enjoyable but doesn't get in the way of the story.Īs for the POV on that supposed game you could go with a pilot coming from the colony but enlisted in the federation army (like he was from Side 2 or any other reason), keep up with him during Stardust Memory and beginning to doubt the Titan's way and joining the AEUG, have him die during the last battle of Zeta and switch to his nephew/niece/whatever which was a member of Karaba on Earth and joins Londo Bell/Bright Noah later on, it was a good time for anyone to become a pilot at that point as ZZ showed. Well unfortunately we know the real reason for that and it certainly wasn't planned at first. It’s just odd that most seem to be third person action games. An expansive mobile suit sim would be fitting for the franchise that practically created the real robot genre. I’m surprised how few first person Gundam games there are, yet even those few are still relatively arcadey, exclusively take place during the OYW, and none of them seem to be in space. It’s feels like a tease for something so much closer to what I really want. Right after you launch though, it immediately switches you to the standard third person view. It takes you from the hanger deck of the Argama (where you select your loadout) to the elevator as it moves you to the catapult. You start a mission out with a first person view from the cockpit. It’s actually kind of frustrating to play the PS1 Zeta game. I’ve dreamed of something like this for years. Missions would take place both on the ground and in space. Ideally, it would have a variety missions (plus a mission editor) and nearly every suit from most of the UC timeline, as well as some alternate timeline stuff as well-even Gundam Wing (admittedly, I have a major soft spot for Wing). You’d even be able to separate and pilot the core fighters. Every button, switch, gauge, monitor, and so on accurately modeled and fully functional. Something very grounded, complicated, and realistic (at least as much as a game about giant robots can be) with VR support. My dream Gundam game would be a hardcore mobile suit sim similar to Steel Battalion or DCS.
